The Rongai Route is the only route that starts from the north side of Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border. It offers a unique and quieter experience, making it ideal for those seeking solitude. The 7-day version provides better acclimatization and increases the chance of reaching the summit compared to the shorter 6-day option.
- Duration: 7 Days / 6 Nights on the mountain
- Starting Point: Rongai Gate (North)
- Ending Point: Mweka Gate (South)
- Highest Point: Uhuru Peak (5,895m)
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Scenery: Good – forest, moorland, alpine desert, glacier
- Success Rate: High (with 7-day acclimatization)
Rongai Route
The Rongai Route ascends Kilimanjaro from the northeast and descends via the southern Mweka Route, giving climbers the experience of both sides of the mountain. It features a gentle ascent, making it a great option for those concerned about altitude. Wildlife sightings, especially in the early rainforest section, are more common here than on other routes.
Because of its remote location, it’s less busy, and weather tends to be drier than on the southern routes.
Highlights

- Panoramic Views of Kenya: On clear days, trekkers are treated to sweeping views of the plains of Kenya, with the opportunity to see both Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes from different angles.
- Gradual Ascent: The Rongai Route has a more gradual incline compared to other routes, making it ideal for climbers seeking a less strenuous climb while still providing a challenging trek.
- Mawenzi Peak: The route passes near Mawenzi Peak, offering close-up views of this dramatic, jagged mountain, which is one of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones.
- Summit via Gilman’s Point: The final summit attempt goes through the relatively less challenging Gilman’s Point, allowing climbers to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
